You are watching: How thick does steel have to be to stop a 7.62 bullet
What im doing is making some hanging gongs the end of some scrap bar steel we have at work. I select some 4" diameter steel simply want to know just how thick to do it so that my .308 won"t turn it into immediate swiss cheese. Some more info this will certainly be hanging in ~ 300 yards and also I will certainly be shoot 168gr FGMM and also 175gr .308 in ~ it. Thanks for any aid and yeah i tried searching however I suck through those things.
At 300 yards, I would hope that a fifty percent inch would protect against a .308, unless it was armor piercing. If you"re worried about penetration, 3 quarters would certainly stop one.

good the piece that to be there are 1/2" and also 1" guess i will just leave them the method they are then thanks
Steel of any kind of sort will at some point fail. Recurring hammering the a malleable steel results in flattening or holes. Certainly far better alloys will certainly stand up longer, yet they all eventually fail. You"d just have to weld it up or change it.Jeff

It still counts lol. Ns shot 1/2" with 175 grain BH ammo through my M40A3 and it walk nothing however splat. Mine dad "errrrr" made decision to shoot it through his hunting round from his .308, and it put a hole clean through it. And also we to be just around 300 out.So you recognize it depends on the ammo too!
